Professor Mushirul Hasan, the ‘Shah Jahan of Jamia’

Mushirul Hasan (15 August 1949 – 10 December 2018) was a historian of modern India. He wrote on the partition of India, communalism, and on the history of Islam in South Asia. Professor Mushirul Hasan was a distinguished historian of modern India, known for his scholarship on various topics including the partition of India, communalism, and the history of Islam in South Asia. His contributions to academia and his administrative roles at Jamia Millia Islamia and other institutions have left a lasting impact on the field of history.

Having served as a professor in the Department of History and Culture at Jamia Millia Islamia, Professor Hasan also held significant administrative positions such as the Director of the Academy of Third World Studies and Pro-Vice Chancellor at Jamia Millia Islamia. His tenure as Vice-Chancellor from 2004 to 2009 earned him the title of an "institution builder," indicating his dedication to enhancing the academic environment and infrastructure at the university.

Professor Hasan's leadership extended beyond Jamia Millia Islamia, as he was appointed Director-General of the National Archives of India in May 2010. His election as President of the Indian History Congress in 2002 further exemplified his recognition and respect within the academic community.
